The Nemrut Mountain National Park, which is a Unesco World Heritage site, provides visitors glimpses into Turkey's history. The area, with its monuments, is the most important Commagene Kingdom sight where the Greek culture mixes with the culture of Persia.
Historically, the Euphrates and Tigris basin has always been a border zone where opposing empires and civilisations have met and often clashed. Settlements on the Euphrates formed the eastern boundary of the Roman Empire against the Persians.
